Thank you New Unity!

9/9/2014

Minister Andy Pakula We are extremely grateful to Minister Andy Pakula (pictured above) and the congregation of local New Unity Unitarian church for raising funds for HCLC during the month of June.

Every month New Unity, which is based in Stoke Newington, chooses a charity to support and the congregation make donations to help support the chosen cause.

In June, New Unity raised over Ј500 for HCLC.  On Sunday 7th September 2014, HCLC Development Officer Miranda Grell attended New Unity's morning service to thank the congregation and to tell them how their funds had been used by HCLC to help even more vulnerable clients fight their cases. Miranda was delighted to discover that the legendary English feminist Mary Wollstonecraft (portrait above) had been a member of New Unity's congregation back in the late 18th century.  Wollstonecraft, who wrote the seminal 'Vindication of the Rights of Woman', was a regular attendee at services at New Unity, inspired by its non conformist sermons touching on very radical issues of the time such as 'equality'.

And there is also a small museum dedicated to Mary Wollstonecraft and other radical pioneers of the time who strove to promote equality and educational rights for women.

HCLC is inspired by and very very grateful to New Unity for their very generous donations to the Law Centre, as well as by the church's continuing commitment to supporting educational opportunities for girls and women and its promotion of equality in general.

Thank you again to all at New Unity!
